The M551 tank replaced the M41 light tank and M56 self-propelled gun in U.S. airborne forces. In January 1963, tests began at Aberdeen proving ground, with two tanks constructed by mid-year. In 1963, it passed military tests for reconnaissance and airborne units of the U.S. Army, with deliveries commencing in 1966. Between July 1966 and 1970, 1,700 tanks were produced, featuring innovative design elements like aluminum armor, plastics, and a gun-launcher capable of firing guided missiles. However, by 1978, the concept had proven unsuccessful, leading to most M551 tanks being removed from service. As of 1986, over 1,500 remained in storage at Annington Arsenal, with a small number still serving the 82nd Airborne Division as of 2008 due to the U.S. having no other serial airborne tanks.
