Shell bead excavated from the Cane Creek site in Mitchell County, North Carolina, dates to the late Middle Woodland period between AD 700-1100. The shell was made from marine material measuring 20.7 mm in length, 18.9 mm in width and 8.2 mm in thickness. A duplicate of this bead is cataloged as specimen 2 with the North Carolina Archaeological Collection at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's Research Laboratories of Archaeology under reference number 1940a127.
