SHELFIE | DIY parametric shelf and storage designer
thingiverse
Shelfie lets users design their own storage systems with complete control over every parameter, thanks to a fully parametric design. By generating the required Shelfie connectors using the Customizer button or OpenSCAD directly, users can bring their ideal shelf system to life based on their preferred layout. This innovation is built on Milla Niskakoski's original idea from http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:681835. I was struck by the simplicity and practicality of Milla's initial design but ran into limitations when trying to build my own shelves. The improvements that made Shelfie possible are numerous: customizable thicknesses allow users to utilize scrap materials instead of buying new ones, mixed thicknesses make it easier to combine different materials in a single project, and a wall mounting bracket option is a critical safety feature, especially for tall shelves. These brackets also enable cross-bracing by connecting tensioned lines between opposite corners or adding a back panel. Furthermore, users can adjust the size of the bracket or the wall thickness to increase strength, attach a shelf or divider mid-span or mid-panel, and use longer shelves or supports for extra stability. This flexibility also allows users to eliminate gaps by having panels butt up against each other. Shelfie offers full control over all parameters, allowing users to mix materials of any thickness, add wall mounts, change screw hole sizes, and much more. An updated version, v2, adds an 'no internal bracing' option to allow panels to butt together seamlessly and a corner radius cut-off option for smooth wall mounting. Users can create custom storage layouts with precision by selecting the bracket type and options in Customizer and generating an STL file that's easy to print without requiring special instructions. A key note is that if the Base Thickness is set to '0', users can design brackets that don't need to be mounted on the panel edge, allowing for mid-panel mounting flexibility.
