A hookah, also known as a waterpipe, narghile, arghila or qalyān, is a device used for vaporizing and smoking flavored tobacco called shisha. The smoke or vapor passes through a water basin before inhalation. Depending on coal placement, it can produce smoke by burning the shisha or create water vapor at lower temperatures. In Arab States of the Persian Gulf, it's referred to as hookah (meaning "jar" in Arabic), while in India and Levant, it is called nargile (Sanskrit for "gourd"). Despite looking similar, smoke and vapor from these devices can be differentiated by users and medical professionals. The waterpipe originated in areas including India and Persia or a transitional point between them; "huqqa" was the original term, which evolved into hookah. Abul-Fath Gilani, a Mughal emperor's physician, is credited with inventing it by cooling smoke through water. The device has gained popularity outside its native regions and continues to spread globally.
