Humans have been shedding skin cells since they emerged on Earth millions of years ago. It's a natural process that occurs when new skin grows beneath the old, and the body sheds the old layer to make way for the new one. This is why you see tiny flakes of dead skin all around you - it's just your body doing its thing.
