Shaper Mechanism

A shaper functions by utilizing a hardened cutting tool that moves back and forth across the workpiece. During the return stroke of the ram, the tool is lifted away from the workpiece, resulting in cutting action occurring solely in one direction. The workpiece is mounted on a rigid table, which can be adjusted for height and moved laterally below the reciprocating tool. Table movement is often controlled by an automatic feed mechanism acting on the feedscrew. The ram travels back and forth above the workpiece, with a vertical tool slide at its front end that can be adjusted to either side of the vertical axis along the stroke. This tool-slide holds the clapper box and toolpost, allowing the cutting tool to shape straight, flat surfaces on the workpiece's top. The tool-slide also enables the tool to feed downwards to deepen cuts. This adjustable setup, combined with specialized cutters and toolholders, empowers the operator to create internal and external gear tooth profiles, splines, dovetails, and keyways.
