Shaper Mechanism
grabcad
A shaper's hardened cutting tool moves back and forth across the workpiece, reducing cutting action to one direction during return strokes. The table-mounted workpiece is adjustable in height and traverses beneath the reciprocating tool. Feed motion is typically automated via feedscrew. A vertical tool slide on the ram's front end, holding the clapper box and toolpost, allows for cutting straight, flat surfaces as well as deepening cuts by feeding the tool downwards. This versatile setup, combined with specialized cutters and holders, enables shapers to create gear tooth profiles, splines, dovetails, and keyways.
