Shapeoko Wooden Probe Holder and Bit setter
thingiverse
My original design was conceived to be 3D printed. These two have been crafted to be cut out on the CNC machine itself. The first file is the bitSetterWood.step, consisting of four pieces of stacked plywood. Some feedback I received indicated that it was a tad too tall for dust collection. This prompted me to design the minimalBitsetterWood.step. This is constructed from a single 3/4-inch piece of plywood with the probe holder designed to be mounted on the side of the Shapeoko away from the probe button. (I have yet to cut this item out, so I don't have any pictures of the minimal bitsetter) These probe holders are designed for the Carbide3D Touch probe and serve as a tool offset probe. They provide an electrical connection from your touch probe to a momentary push button that allows you to automatically calculate tool offset. This enables you to utilize the debouncing and other circuitry already contained within your touch probe, allowing your gcode sender to automatically reset your Z-axis zero point to reflect a new bit length. My picture displays a flat top normally open momentary push button. This limits the diameter of the tool that you can probe the length of. Instead, I would recommend obtaining a high flush version of the same push button. The wiring is quite simple; you just connect one wire from one side of the push button to the bolts and washers that sit under the probe for the Shapeoko. The other lead from the push button is connected to a protruding bolt that I clamp the probe's alligator clip to. To verify your setup is correct, turn the power on to your Shapeoko and press the button. The green LED in the touch probe should turn red, indicating you have completed the circuit between the probe and the alligator clip. I CNCed this out of 3/4 plywood on the Shapeoko itself. I designed it to be cut out with a 1/4-inch and 1/8-inch endmill.
