Shankill - KK019-131
sketchfab
This ancient relic was unearthed in 1970 on the border between Shankill, County Kilkenny and Wells, County Carlow. It was subsequently donated to the museum at Rothe House, where it is proudly showcased (Old Kilkenny Review 1969, 101). Notably small in size, measuring approximately 0.57 meters high, 0.14 meters at its widest point and 0.055 meters thick, this stone stands mounted on a wooden base in a manner that obscures the final consonant on the first angle of the inscription. The intricate inscription is etched onto three angles, reading downward as follows: left angle MAQI CUNALIG...; right front angle MAQI; right rear angle MUCOI COSCIS/N. Given its diminutive size, McManus (1991, 75-6) has posited that one might entertain some reservations regarding its antiquity.
