Some ideas just pop up out of nowhere, and that's exactly what happened when I reached over to grab some salt from the table. As I was thinking it would be great to have a few extra salt shakers on hand, I suddenly remembered the lumber I had picked up at the saw mill just a few days before. That's when it hit me: let's make some beautiful salt and pepper shakers out of oak and walnut. As I gathered around 20 mm of hardwood, a new idea started to take shape. Why not create interlocking parts that can be machined from one side only? This would simplify the process and make it easier to get started. I fired up my desktop CNC machine by Stepcraft and reached for my trusty 3 mm high-grade endmill, which is specifically designed for working with wood. I designed everything in Fusion360, a great piece of software that's still teaching me new tricks every day. I'm eager to speed up the process and get more comfortable using it. One of the coolest features I discovered was the ability to create a drawing from 3D parts. This really helped me set up my toolpaths, as the CAM part of Fusion can be a bit overwhelming at times. I even included a STL file with the parts in case anyone wants to try printing them out. Unfortunately, I don't have access to a 3D printer right now, so that's on my to-do list for later.
