The Shaheed Minar, meaning "Martyr Monument" in Bengali, is a national monument located in Dhaka, Bangladesh that honors those killed during the Bengali Language Movement protests of 1952 while East Pakistan was still part of Pakistan. On February 21 and 22, 1952, students from Dhaka University and Dhaka Medical College, along with political activists, were fatally shot by Pakistani police as they fought for official recognition of the Bengali language. Initially, a temporary monument was erected by the University of Dhaka's students and others on February 23, but it was later demolished by the Pakistani police force on February 26.
