Sha or Kulere, Nigeria, Mask, Late 19th century, 2000.319
thingiverse
Sha or Kulere artists from Nigeria's Central region created this strikingly abstract mask in the late 19th century. The wooden and rubber mask, which measures 64.8 cm high, features remnants of Abrus precatorious seeds, held together by a natural rubber mastic. Originally covered with bright red seeds, the pockmarked surface now showcases the remains of the backing material. In Nigeria and other parts of Africa, Abrus seeds are used in powerful herbal remedies and sometimes as poisons. Therefore, their use on this artwork may symbolize healing or danger. The mask is part of the Faletti Family Collection, a gift from Richard Faletti, acquired by the Art Institute of Chicago in 2000 (2000.319).
