Joe Colombo was a prolific Italian architect and designer who believed in democratic and functional design. Born Cesare Colombo, he envisioned designs that could be used in many different ways, all for the benefit of the user. Ahead of his time, Colombo relied on emerging materials and the latest technologies to create futuristic "machines for living," many of which have become icons for a new way of living. Sferico was a key component of Joe Colombo's democratic and functional design philosophy. During his lifetime, he designed a wide range of drinking glasses that seemed perfectly suited to his love of drinking and smoking. Unfortunately, this undoubtedly contributed to his young demise, but it is likely that he would be pleased to see that his creations continue to thrive. In 1968, Colombo designed a series of six glasses based on geometrical figures. True to his democratic and functional approach to design, all the glasses were intended for a wide range of uses - from water to long drinks, whisky to wine, beer to juice, champagne to ice cream, and so on.
