A matrix fills space in an 8-directional grid system. The primary cubes are rhombic dodecahedra with 48 facets. They link up in strings at their central points, with each shared vertex also surrounded by 16 octahedral cells. Here is a loop of 9 main cubes surrounding the axis of symmetry, connected to one of the inner main cubes by octahedra. All the space between major cubes can be filled with smaller cells whose edges are each one unit length away from the grid system.
