Trachycarpus fortunei, the Chinese windmill palm or Chusan palm, is a species of hardy evergreen palm tree native to parts of China, Japan, Myanmar and India. Windmill Palms are considered the kings of northern palms, easily withstanding annual winter temperatures dipping from 0°F to -10°F without significant damage to dark lustrous leaves. A slender trunk with a full head of dark green palmate leaves gives any landscape a classy look fit for royalty. The Chinese windmill palm is also great for southern landscapes. It's one of the best palm trees for northern and southern climates due to its ease of care and disease hardiness, growing up to 20-30 feet tall. Like most evergreens, it grows in spurts from year to year, averaging six to twelve inches annually even in the north.
