Seshed Circlet (ssd / mdh)

The royal circlet is first seen during Sneferu's reign and later continues to be worn. At this early time, it is always paired with either the atef-crown or the Double Feathers. Its main purpose is to hold the uraeus in place. Several examples of golden or silver circlets have been discovered, typically adorned with semi-precious stones or colored glass. One such example was found in Tutankhamun's tomb, where it sat atop the bandages covering his head. It is always depicted as being worn around a short wig. When paired with the Amun-Crown, the royal circlet can be tied directly to the crown base. Written records of the term ssd (luminous) and mdh can be found in both the Pyramid Texts and later funerary literature, where they describe the radiant appearance of the stellar gods and Thoth as well as the deceased.
