Sterling Silver Serving Spoon made by Schulz and Fischer, a renowned San Francisco, California-based company: Cleopatra pattern patented in 1879 showcases the couple's interest in exotic motifs from distant lands during the second half of the 19th century. The large serving spoon boasts a gold coating for optimal protection against acidic foods. This valuable silverware features a monogram bearing MA, likely Martha Avery, wife of J.C. Avery, founder of Corvallis. The company behind this masterpiece, Schulz and Fischer, originally opened its doors as Schulz, Fischer and Mohring in 1868 before evolving through various names until 1883. This exceptional silverware was forged by one of several West Coast companies that sprouted to life following the Comstock silver discoveries in Nevada, which yielded a staggering $150 million worth of silver between 1859 and 1880. Accession number BCHS 2002-087.0001.
