Serpentine bowl decorated with recumbent lions
sketchfab
BLMJ 04564 Late Uruk - Jemdet Nasr period, around 3300-2900 BCE in Uruk, Southern Mesopotamia A serpentine bowl is beautifully decorated with recumbent lions and calves standing before the symbol of An, the Sumerian god of heaven. The bowl was skillfully carved in stylized relief showing lions and calves crouching before a reed hut surmounted by a pair of reed poles. Similar depictions of striding lions and bovines are found on seal impressions from Uruk. On the bowl, the poles are topped with a single rolled reed bundle forming a volute. This type of cult reed pole is known only in archaic Uruk and has been identified as An's symbol since it was carved on blocks at the cult repository's false door at the foot of An's ziggurat.
