Sepulcros. Iglesia Santa María de Gradefes

The monastery was founded in 1177 as a female Cistercian convent by nuns from Tulebras in Navarre. The establishment of the monastery is due to the noblewoman Teresa Petri, who was also its first abbess. Teresa Petri was the wife of the knight García Pérez, who in 1151 received from King Alfonso VII all the real estate that he had in Gradefes. At the death of her husband in 1166, Teresa Petri decided to found a ecclesiastical lordship with a monastery where she became abbess, a position she held until her death in 1187. In one section of the apse, two lying tombs are exposed, which have been identified as the sepulchers of García Pérez and his wife, Teresa Petri, the founder. These tombs were transferred from the monastery of San Benito de Sahagún in León, where they were first buried, in response to testamentary demands.
