Sepulcro de Benito Arias Montano

The renowned humanist from Extremadura, Benito Arias Montano (1527-1598), is buried in this tomb. He was a prolific writer and editor, best known for his edition of the Polyglot Bible of Antwerp. As a chaplain and advisor to King Philip II, he lived out his final years in Seville before passing away in that city. Arias Montano's figure lies on top of an urn in this tomb, surrounded by intricate carvings. He wears the cloak of the Order of Santiago, with its shield emblazoned on his chest. A bishop's hat covers his head, resting gently on two cushions. His hands are placed on a book, inscribed "BIBLIA REGIA" - another name for the Polyglot Bible, which King Philip II had commissioned. Arias Montano's face appears remarkably lifelike, while the treatment of his clothing is stiff and somewhat outdated.
