SEPULCRO DE ALFONSO IX

SEPULCRO DE ALFONSO IX

Traditionally, this tomb was identified with that of his father, Fernando II, although stylistic issues suggest the piece belongs to a later moment in time, chronologically aligning with the date of Alfonso IX's death in 1230. Although he actually belonged, as King of Galicia and León, to be Alfonso VIII, traditional historiography assigned him the title IX to differentiate him from his cousin, king of Castile at that time. Alfonso IX was a fundamental monarch for Galicia, founding several cities, including A Coruña, and decisively supporting the Compostela seat and pilgrimages to Santiago. Under his reign, on April 21, 1211, the solemn ceremony of consecration of the cathedral took place, attended by his firstborn son Fernando Alfonso and the main figures of his court. He died in Sarria in September 1230, during a pilgrimage to Compostela that ended with him dead to be buried in the Royal Pantheon established institutionally during his reign.
