The Sepulchre proudly showcases Mary cradling baby Jesus, masterfully crafted to serve as the crowning glory of the esteemed Gherardesca family's heritage. Initially, this exquisite work resided within the sacred walls of the Church of Saint Francesco. The Gherardeschis or della Gherardescas were a powerful and ancient clan with roots tracing back to the 11th century, hailing from the Republic of Pisa and boasting a rich Longobard ancestry. By the midpoint of the 13th century, they had solidified their position as one of Pisa's most influential families. Their unwavering allegiance to the Ghibelline faction earned them the esteemed title of county holders for Donoratico. The skilled artisan behind this masterpiece is none other than Lupo di Francesco, a gifted sculptor from Pisa who joined forces with Giovanni Pisani to create the breathtaking pulpit of the Cathedral of Pisa. Under the guidance of the renowned Tino di Camaino, Lupo di Francesco honed his craft and went on to serve as the chief architect of the very same Cathedral in 1315. His impressive work continued until 1325, leaving an indelible mark on the city's architectural landscape.
