Sensory Connectors

thingiverse

April 2016 To create this project, I envisioned a conjoined mask that interacts with the facial senses of sight, breath, and smell, while also placing its two wearers in close proximity. Initially, the pieces were intended to be worn together, but I underestimated their size, so they must now be worn separately. The eye piece connects the two wearers' sight, forcing them to gaze into each other's eyes. This part of the mask was inspired by Lygia Clark's Dialogue: Goggles. Notably, the eye piece was the most comfortable part for people to wear. I believe that maintaining direct eye contact is becoming increasingly rare and making individuals more uneasy - yet, many humans are accustomed to sustaining this type of visual connection. On the other hand, sharing breath is a much less common practice. Although the mask is voluntary in nature, its two performers have chosen to wear it, prompting an interaction between senses that people typically don't engage with.
