Jean-Baptiste Pigalle, a renowned French sculptor, was born in Paris on January 26, 1714, to a family of modest means, with his father being a skilled carpenter. Despite facing setbacks, including the failure to secure the prestigious Prix de Rome award, Pigalle persevered and eventually gained admission to the esteemed Académie Royale, where he rose to become one of the most celebrated sculptors of his time. Early works like "Child with Cage" and "Mercury Fastening his Sandals" showcased his developing talent, but it was not until later years that his artistry truly flourished, as exemplified by his iconic nude statue of Voltaire (1776) now housed in the Louvre, along with his impressive tombs for Comte d'Harcourt (1764) and Marshal Saxe (1777). Pigalle's influence extended beyond his own creations, as he taught prominent sculptor Louis-Philippe Mouchy, who not only studied under him but also married his niece and emulated his distinctive style. The legacy of Jean-Baptiste Pigalle endures today, largely due to the eponymous red-light district in Paris that bears his name. Tragically, Pigalle passed away on August 20, 1785, in the very city where he had lived and worked for most of his life.
