The artist takes center stage, depicting himself in profile, "all'antica" - a nod to the Romans. This style was a staple during the Renaissance, as many artists sought to emulate the ancient Greeks and Romans by studying classical texts and artefacts that were gradually being unearthed. It's also noteworthy that the inscription beneath his self-portrait proclaims him a Florentine citizen. At the time of its creation in 1556, Florence had maintained its autonomy for centuries, with the Medici family's reign extending its political and financial reach across much of central Italy.
