Self Aligning Cup/Bottle Holder

Self Aligning Cup/Bottle Holder

A self-aligning cup/bottle holder designed specifically for use with crutches, walkers, and wheelchairs leverages the gyroscopic effect and gravity to keep contents perfectly aligned at all times. People with limited hand mobility often struggle to carry bottles and cups while navigating these assistive devices, relying on others for assistance. To address this challenge, I created a gyroscopic cup holder that ensures drinks are always correctly positioned, allowing users to focus on their mobility needs. This design features multiple versions of various components to accommodate different tube sizes, cup/bottle sizes, and placements, making it suitable for most applications. If specific size requirements arise for the tube clip or clip supports, please let me know and I will work with you to create a custom solution. Printed with ABS at 280°C, this design uses two perimeters (although two are sufficient, three or four are recommended for added strength), a speed of 50mm/s, three solid top and bottom layers, and 20% infill at 0.2mm layer height. Due to the tendency for warping in ABS, PLA or PET may be a better choice for printing. Assembly begins by selecting the required tube clip type (standard or rotated) based on the intended installation location. Next, an M4 screw and nut are needed; I used nylon locking ones but this is not necessary. The tube clip is then joined to the first ring (ring_1.stl). The second ring requires two 20mm M4 screws and nuts, which are simply slid onto corresponding holes before attaching it to the first ring (ring_1.stl). Ensure that the screw head rotates freely within its space; if warping has occurred, the holes may be too tight, requiring sanding or reprinting. There are two versions of the final ring (ring_3.stl and ring_3_alt.stl): a solid one for those who do not need an additional bottom part. Assemble it in the same manner as the previous rings. If printing the solid version of the final ring, you can add clips and a bottom coaster to the cup holder. At this point, select from available sizes (S, M, L, or XL) for the supports; if unsure, the L size is likely suitable for adults while the M size is best for children. Clip both parts (part1 and part2) onto the third ring, which should snap into place easily. Finally, position the coaster at the center, where it will remain in place under the weight of a cup/bottle; you may need to add a few drops of glue to ensure it stays secure. As an additional improvement, consider adding a bit of cork to the coaster for better grip on drinks. Verify that all rings rotate almost frictionlessly; if not, sand them, reprint them, or apply a small amount of grease. Every ring is attached using 20mm M4 screws and nuts, except for the tube clip, which can be secured with a good quality zip tie. Tip: Apply electrical insulating tape around the area where you will attach the tube clip to provide extra grip for the clip. Tip 2: Add a circle of cork to the bottom of the coaster for improved grip on drinks.
