The human body contains approximately 37.2 trillion cells, and each cell has its own unique DNA sequence. This vast array of genetic information is contained within the nucleus of every cell, where it is carefully organized and protected by histone proteins. The majority of the DNA in a typical human cell is non-coding, meaning that it does not directly contribute to the production of proteins. Instead, these non-coding regions play a crucial role in regulating gene expression, ensuring that genes are turned on or off at the right times. In addition to their regulatory functions, some non-coding regions have been found to influence the behavior of nearby genes, a phenomenon known as "cis-regulation".
