Before I discuss this project, I want to express my gratitude to Andrew at Wizo Script (http://www.wizotools.com/). His script has transformed a tedious drawing process into a surprisingly simple and easy task - a feat that will become clear later. Thanks, Andrew, you're the man! Now let's talk about the project: extending and retracting a 45-meter wing isn't feasible with a traditional 60-support-slide setup, mainly due to space constraints and unequal spacing issues between slides. This problem led me to create a mechanical means of ensuring consistent support - which I initially attempted with a scissor jack actuator. Despite initial concerns about providing the necessary torque and strength, a different solution presented itself while I was waiting for my morning coffee: designing a segmented jack screw. For lack of a better term, this is essentially a standard jack screw split into multiple segments. By keeping one tube stationary and rotating the outer tube, each segment's position adjusts accordingly to accommodate varying levels of retraction or extension. As shown in the first five slide screenshots, maintaining even spacing across all 60 slides requires no additional setup - whether extending or retracting. As seen in the exploded view screen shot, seven individual components comprise each segment; an eighth part is reserved for creating mounting seat wells on the base wing for the jack plates, showcasing how drawn this could have been if manual input had dominated. To make things simpler, a configurations option drastically cuts down drawing time to 8 simple steps: one for each type of component involved. While configuring makes file count plummet, there's still no getting around having over 450 files that account for segment differences and required updates when moving through parts with different labels as needed so that those details show accurate across them all before moving onward towards other parts where specific attributes need updating according. Here we find that because each individual element may need to get assigned specific parameters such requirements add substantial work effort however with appropriate software doing all those heavy tasks in three hours error free run no more troubles ahead. To recap, what initially appeared a tedious nightmare became a cake walk when I decided use software solution provided by wizotools that let draw all 8 necessary base part just one single instance afterwards automatically generated accurate files representing segmented components which allowed easily access necessary specifications and adjustments every step along way even during time-consuming operations which significantly lessened burden allowing accomplish required outcome faster with peace of mind.
