The Sega Master System is a third-generation home video game console that was manufactured by Sega. It first hit the market in 1985 as the Sega Mark III in Japan, before undergoing a redesign and being rebranded as Master System for its North American launch. The Master System was released in 1986 in North America, 1987 in Europe, and 1989 in Brazil. In addition to these international releases, the console also debuted in Japan in 1987 with some notable features that were not included on overseas models. The original Mark III and Master System consoles could run both cartridges (officially known as Mega Cartridges) and Sega Cards, a smaller credit-card-sized format that was priced lower than cartridges but offered less storage space; later versions of the console, including the Master System II, did not include the card slot. Accessories for the Master System included a light gun and 3D glasses designed to work with games specifically coded for them.
