The Sega Genesis, also known as the Mega Drive in international markets, is a groundbreaking 16-bit home video game console developed and commercially released by Sega Enterprises. The Genesis marked Sega's third entry into the gaming console market, succeeding the Master System. In Japan, Sega initially launched the Mega Drive in 1988, followed shortly by its North American debut under the Genesis brand name in 1989. Later, in 1990, the console was distributed as the Mega Drive in Europe by Virgin Mastertronic, and by Ozisoft in Australasia and Tectoy in Brazil. Notably, in South Korea, Samsung handled distribution, marketing it as both the Super Gam*Boy and later the Super Aladdin Boy.
