Seed Starter
thingiverse
I designed this to help start seeds indoors before moving them outside. It is currently printing and will be uploaded as a photo when completed, along with an overfill tray. The open area is slightly off-center, but I included the 123D files so you can make any necessary edits. I'm printing both models with 20% infill and bottom/top thickness of .6mm, .1mm layer height, and .8mm shell thickness. It's intentionally small since it's meant for seeds and is being printed on the MP Mini Delta (110mm X, 110mm Y, 120mm Z) build area. Feel free to scale as needed. Printing on the MP Mini Delta took a total of 6 hours and 8 minutes, with a brief slowdown. I will also upload photos as I print more models with names and when they start to sprout. For Version 2, I'm considering adding a small horizontal bar across the drainage to prevent soil leakage, along with some internal slots on the bottom or sides for string to aid in moving seedlings into the garden. I'll also experiment with printing at 10% and 5% infill to see how it holds up to water. I haven't tested the 20% model yet. So far, two of these models have been printed without leaking, except for the drains. I've added STLs for Cherry Tomato, Beefsteak, Romaine Lettuce (currently printing), and now Peas with planting information. It'll be interesting to see how they turn out. I removed the 123D files except for the plain/basic one. I also added Peas with instructions on how to plant them. Update: Printed Peas with 5% infill, and will add dirt and water tomorrow after 15 hours of printing (I slowed down to 20% speed overnight, then set it to 200% speed). Side note: I haven't printed trays yet, but I found a small Nestle Pure Life bottle that works great as runoff/drainage; however, it does lift the Seed Starter up about .5". I added Jalapeno and sweet basil STLs along with some words that can be imported and merged to make designing easier. I also created a little tool to help with transplanting seedlings. I printed one and am using it. The lift-out tool was designed to be disposable, so it's crude and only 5% solid. 2-10-2019: Added a photo of the Romaine and Peas starter sprouted approximately 10 days outdoors. I also added STLs for something I printed but got the size wrong - it's round with a hole in the bottom. My dad asked me to grow some spinach, so I put the seeds in yesterday with a coffee filter to allow drainage while keeping the dirt in place.
