This iconic monument in Sint-Niklaas commemorates those who lost their lives and were affected by World War 1. Situated on the east side of Houtbriel Square, it's a prominent landmark in the city. The unveiling ceremony took place on May 30th, 1926. In August 1923, the City Council set aside 100,000 Francs to honor the heroes who fought for their country's freedom and left behind memories that will live on through future generations. A special committee contributed 50,000 Francs to support the creation of a Sacred Heart statue. The sculptor Bruno Gerrits was commissioned to create the monument and signed a contract on August 20th, 1923. He agreed to receive 29,500 Francs for his work on the sculpture group. This object is part of "Scan The World", a non-profit initiative launched by MyMiniFactory that aims to create a digital archive of fully 3D printable sculptures, artworks, and landmarks from around the globe. The public can access these models for free through Scan The World's open-source platform.
