Carriere Saingt, Fleury-sur-Orne, Calvados, France. File .3ds + Image .jpg (5000 x 5000 pixels). Acquisition by photogrammetry. Treatment by Agisoft PhotoScan. On the morning of June 6, 1944, and the start of the Invasion, the city of Caen was bombed by the Allies. Residents from surrounding cities then fled combat and sought shelter. Some naturally found refuge in the underground quarry of Fleury-sur-Orne. The Saingt brothers set up a supply system to provide food and drink to the civilian refugees. During the weeks that followed, up to 1,000 people took shelter in this place. By July's end, civilians were discovered and removed from the quarry by Canadian soldiers, leaving behind many objects. In 2014, an archaeological preservation operation with experimental character was carried out by INRAP Normandie in collaboration with INSA Strasbourg.
