Seated Woman, Penelope

Seated Woman, Penelope

Representing Penelope accurately is highly unlikely; more likely it's a funerary monument. A Roman replica of a Greek original has been crafted. The artist has replaced the stool from the original with a rock and given the figure an androgynous youth's face. This statue shows signs of heavy restoration. Penelope sits on a stone wall, her head modestly covered by a veil, gazing pensively at the ground as she thinks about her husband. This is a typical pose in artistic depictions of Penelope—legs crossed, eyes cast downward, hand to her face (Figures 2.1, 19.1, 20.1). A Roman replica of an ancient Greek original has been created; possibly dating back to the 1st century BC. The original Greek work is believed to have been crafted around 460 BC.
