Seated Woman, Penelope
myminifactory
Unlikely to truly embody Penelope; more likely a funerary monument created by the Romans as a replica of an ancient Greek work. The artist responsible for copying the original sculpture made significant changes, replacing the stool with a rock and giving the figure a youthful face that is neither distinctly male nor female. Heavily restored throughout its history, this representation depicts Penelope seated on a stone wall, lost in thought as she gazes at the ground, remembering her husband. This particular stance is characteristic of artistic renderings of Penelope, with legs crossed and hand to her cheek (Figures 2.1, 19.1, 20.1). A Roman copy from the 1st century BC, likely based on a lost Greek original created around 460 BC.
