The Demeter of Knidos is a remarkably preserved life-size statue from ancient Greece, discovered in the port city of Knidos, southwestern Asia Minor. Now housed at the British Museum, it showcases exceptional Hellenistic craftsmanship from approximately 350 BC. Measuring about 150 centimeters (4 feet 11 inches) in height, this magnificent marble sculpture depicts a serene and powerful goddess seated on an intricately carved throne. Although some fragments of the throne are missing, including its back and armrests, Demeter's lower arms and hands, separately crafted with great precision, remain intact. The head, expertly carved independently from the body, is securely fixed to the neck, adding to the statue's stunning appearance. As a testament to her revered status in Greek mythology, Demeter exudes a timeless aura, revealing her maternal role as a guardian of fertility and agriculture in the pantheon of gods.
