Seated Virgin Mary, Mater dolorosa
myminifactory
This Seated Woman of Sorrow (also known as 'Mother of Pain' or 'Seated Figure of Agony') is a complete-body sculpture by Germain Pilon, finished in 1586. The original, a complex marble with intricate fabric folds, resides at the Église Saint-Paul-Saint-Louis in Paris where it rests in a recess (that's why it has only been molded from the front). Our Lady of Suffering is a title given to the Virgin Mary in connection to the hardships she endured. As Mother of Agony, it is also a central theme for art about the Virgin Mary within the Catholic Church.
