Imhotep was a high-ranking official who spearheaded the construction of Egypt's inaugural monumental stone pyramid at the dawn of the Third Dynasty (around 2650-2600 B.C.). This groundbreaking achievement left an indelible mark on the Egyptians, ensuring Imhotep's lasting legacy in later Egyptian history. As the New Kingdom era unfolded, he was revered as the patron deity of writing and wisdom, and by the time this statue was crafted, he had risen to fully divine status with a rich mythology and devoted cult. Imhotep is often depicted with closely cropped hair or a cap, seated regally while clutching an open papyrus scroll. In this example, the intricately inlaid figure of the god was created separately from his elaborate throne and base. The throne stands tall with a rounded back, its seat framed by a sophisticated cavetto-like molding, and the legs below the seat are connected by panels featuring vertical cutouts.
