This monumental figure, crafted under Amenhotep III's watchful eye, still radiates a distinctive presence despite its weathered state. Originally positioned in the temple built to honor Amen-Re in Luxor (the ancient city known as Thebes), this colossal statue stood alongside its counterpart (22.5.1) until Merneptah seized it nearly two centuries later, relocating it to the eastern entrance of the temple. Merneptah's deeply etched title contrasts sharply with the subtle carving on both sides of the throne of the other, larger colossus, featuring the sema tawy ("Unification of the Two Lands") motif. Though the broad, flat planes and bold proportions characteristic of Egyptian architectural sculpture are evident here, these two pieces stand out for their exceptional sculptural details, particularly in the rendering of facial features and costume elements.
