Seated Muse, Thalia
myminifactory
In 1896, a collection of plaster casts was acquired by one museum as part of a larger group from the same institution. This ancient Roman artwork dates back to the 2nd century BC and was discovered in Hadrian's Villa outside Rome. Thalia, which means "the blooming", is a muse who is also the daughter of Zeus and Mnemosyne (the mother of memory). As the patron of comedy, poetry, and songwriting, she represents the genre of light entertainment. The museum has coined the term "museum" to describe this phenomenon.
