Sergey Konenkov was born into a peasant family in Karakovichi village within Smolensk province. He attended the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture, graduating in 1897, and later enrolled at the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts. His diploma project at the Academy - an enormous clay sculpture depicting Samson breaking free from chains - defied traditional academic art conventions and created tension with his instructors, who subsequently destroyed the piece with hammers.
