Featuring Ganesha, one of India's most revered gods, this sculpture originates from Karnataka state, India. Crafted by the Hoysala style and created between 1200-1300, it is made of Schist medium. The de Young Museum Society Auxiliary gifted it. Adorned with a crown and jewels, Ganesha's divine nature is displayed through his elephant head and multiple arms. Each object he grasps has significant meaning: a battle axe, a broken lotus, a bowl of sweets, and a broken tusk. A popular myth explains the origin of his elephant head - his mother Parvati created him and his father Shiva mistakenly beheaded him but restored him with an elephant head. Elephants in Indian culture symbolize fertility and prosperity due to their resemblance to rain clouds.
