Seated Figure of a Bodhisattva at the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts, Norwich
myminifactory
This serene figure embodies a Bodhisattva in tranquil repose, positioned with elegance in the pose of rajilila (regal ease), as the right knee is raised and the left leg rests flat on the ground. The figure showcases a bare torso adorned with intricate drapery and jewellery, with a majestic jewelled collar that boasts heavy loops and pendants. The hair is styled in an elaborate coiffure, piled high on the head, featuring a topknot carved from a separate piece of wood. Bands encircle both upper arms, while a scarf twists over the left shoulder, flowing around the back and draped elegantly over the right arm. The remainder of the scarf is skillfully wound around the waist. From the waist downwards, a robe envelops the legs. This figure remains in remarkable condition despite suffering significant damage to its surface. Fortunately, the back is better preserved than the front, retaining more lacquer and gilding. Unfortunately, the right forearm and hand have broken off; a discernible hole indicates where a piece had once been reattached with a dowel. This object is part of "Scan The World".
