Seated Buddha at the Guimet Museum, Paris
myminifactory
This massive sculpture of a Buddha was crafted in the Heian style and originates from Japan, dating back to the first half of the 11th century. Made from wood with visible traces of lacquer paint, it suggests that this highly decorated Buddha was once placed in a temple. The Warihagi-Zukuri style is evident as it was carved out of a single piece of wood before being adorned with paint. The positions of a Buddha's hands can reveal its purpose or representation. With the right hand raised and palm facing outward, the Karana Mudra resembles the expulsion of negative energy; the left hand rests on the lap, facing upwards, representing compassion, sincerity, and wish granting through the Varada Mudra. This object is part of "Scan The World", a non-profit initiative introduced by MyMiniFactory.
