Seat Belt Button - Buckle Stop

[Update Nov.23, 2021 : I came up with a variation on the original design; this second version works betters on some seatbelts. See the additional files with “06” in the name.]

You can mail order one of these for $1 and wait a week or three, or just print this one in 15 minutes for 5 cents.

This is the plastic button on your seat belt that keeps the buckle at a convenient height when the seat belt is disengaged. Since they have a tendency to break off and get lost, being able to print a replacement is quite convenient.

This button prints in four parts, so that the center “pin” can be printed in the strongest orientation (see photos).

Installation

The easiest way to install the button is to make a “pilot hole” in the seat belt using an awl. The idea is to form a hole in the belt weave by going between the fibers, and not cutting or tearing the fibers (which would weaken then belt). A tool with a slightly rounded as opposed to a pointed end is better for this.

Placement : The hole should be centered in the belt, and located about 18 inches (45cm) off the floor. Be sure to slide the buckle above the pin location before inserting the button!

Assemble the “pin” side of the button by inserting the two halves of the pin into the “donut”, and then insert the pin into the pilot hole. This will be a tight fit, so using a pair of pliers to force the belt over the pin is helpful.

With the pin inserted, place the second half of the button over the pin on the opposite side of the belt. Squeeze the two halves together using the pliers. Done!

Print Instructions

Print in PLA using the 3mf or gcode files provided. All four parts can be printed at the same time. The general settings are :

0.2mm layer height

0% infill

perimeters = 6

Orient the parts on the print bed as shown in the photos.

I should note that some people think PLA does not perform well in a hot car in summer heat, so printing in PETG might be preferable.

Note there are now two different versions, the “02” and the “06” versions; use the version that works best on your seat belt.

CAD

https://cad.onshape.com/documents/557ac2c7f2f3f17907adf018/w/1609b897e3c1fd4e7d349ab0/e/e1d6083828f5f907e3dfc6e6
