Seagull spinner
thingiverse
This is a replica of a handcrafted wooden spinner that I had made. Assembly is relatively straightforward: attach the wings to the wing blocks using Gorilla Glue. Place the shaft through the seagull's body and slide the wing blocks onto each side. When the wings are positioned at the front, they should tilt inward and down. Then carefully glue washers onto each end of the shaft. Hammer a brad into a thin wood post and place the seagull on it. To add extra durability, insert a 5 mm O.D. brass tube into the bottom of the seagull. You can see this in action here: https://youtu.be/dGhyi_6C3Dk I also created a separate body file that fits better on printers with small build plates. After several summers of use, I discovered that the shaft warped in the heat of the sun and eventually snapped off. I replaced it with a 5" long 3/8" diameter galvanized steel carriage bolt. The wings kept falling off too. I finally settled on using hot glue as the best way to attach them; no other glue seemed to work as well.
