Sea Airplane (Modular) - Remix
thingiverse
This is an enhanced remix/modification of a well-crafted original posted by "swtchrwr". Grandkids and I had a blast working on the original version together, adding threaded pins or parts to make it a take-apart model. Some parts in this plane are still original, while others have been modified. One thing worth noting is that some of my modified .stl files don't look great when viewed here on Thingiverse, such as the rudder. It appears to have holes in it? I think that's because of how Thingiverse renders .stl files with multiple surfaces at the same location. Alternatively, it could be a result of limited tools and my knowledge of working with .stl files. Even though they look a bit messy, they load and slice perfectly in Cura. I'll likely work on learning to clean them up in the future, but for now, they're what they are. Notes: The screws are designed as two pieces to improve the strength of the finished product compared to printing them on end with weak layers that might come apart when tightened. Use CA to glue the halves together. Since most users have "not perfect" 3D printers, be gentle when starting the screws in their holes for the first time to avoid cross-threading. Be patient and work it in and out in small increments to clean out the threads. The flats on the screws help with this, but still, be gentle at first. The wrench will fit all of the hex head screws. You can store it in the cockpit notch right under the wing. To create a nice friction fit so that it doesn't fall out, you can either sand it down if it's too tight or add a drop of glue to the face of the wrench, let it cure/dry, and then sand it back down for that friction fit. I glued (CA) the floats and float struts to the bottom wing. I couldn't come up with a good way to use a threaded method; they're just too small for my 3D printer to make a good thread. The wing struts don't need glue. They fit nicely between the two wings without any additional help when the upper and lower screws are attached.
