<p>A cheap and effective method for taking photos of Coomassie/silver-stained SDS-PAGE gels is to use a light box and a cardboard box with a hole cut out from the bottom. It's like a home-made gel doc just for Coomassie/silver-stained gels. The box blocks almost all external light from reaching the gel for a nice clear image without reflections (such as those from overhead fluorescent lighting common in laboratories).
