The term heavy armoured reconnaissance vehicle refers to six and eight-wheeled armored cars used by Germany during World War Two. In the German Army, armored cars were designed for traditional cavalry missions like reconnaissance and screening. They led the way ahead and on the sides of advancing mechanized units to determine enemy location, strength, and intentions. Their main role was reconnaissance, but they also engaged similar or light units and sometimes attempted to capture enemy patrols. The heavy armoured reconnaissance vehicle was a large, fast, and highly versatile addition to the German Army. The original six-wheeled versions were based on a 6x4 truck with an armored body, but by 1937, they were being replaced by eight-wheeled models. During this transition, special vehicle numbers were carried over directly; differentiation is made by adding "six-wheel" or "eight-wheel" to the vehicle's name.
