Scylla

Ancient poems speak of a perilous waterway where death looms large for those who dare approach it. Sailors are forced to make a choice: risk their ship by navigating close to Charybdis, a monstrous whirlpool that strikes fear into the hearts of all who see it, or cling to the rocky shoreline where a creature born from humanity's darkest nightmares awaits. They call her Scylla, Horror of the Sea. No vessel that ventures near her domain escapes unscathed. Those who manage to survive whisper tales of terror about enormous black tentacles tipped with slavering hound heads that shred entire ships to splinters with merciless precision. Her laughter is said to be the most chilling sound of all; a child-like cackle that delights in blood-soaked carnage as men are dragged into the dark abyss. Poets have tried to humanize this beast, to add some semblance of compassion to her monstrous nature. They write that she was once a beautiful Naiad, wronged by a jealous priestess and transformed. However, ancient poems claim that Scylla was born with her monstrous form, begotten by gods consumed by jealousy and hatred; abandoned in the sea to wreak havoc on humanity. Would that she had remained in the depths of the ocean, but the nightmare has come ashore. Dragged by dog-headed tentacles, Scylla roams our streets, snatches us from our beds, and fills the night with an unsettling laughter. She has arrived, and not even the gods can save us from her wrath.
